Brilliant Reverie

There’s a lot we love about this project, but perhaps what we love most is how it proves the power of interior design. When we started, this ranch home was your average flip: gray, boxy, no notable details or architecture, and a decent, but predictable floor plan. Now it is a jewel box that straddles art deco and granny chic, with balance, function, pattern, and color that move you from room to room.

Built-ins are major anchor points of storage and architecture throughout the home. The living room is weighted with a wall of bookshelves and a deep custom window seat for naps and reading. The pass-through dining room is anchored with a custom banquette clad in teal velvet upholstery, illuminated with jewelry-like lighting. The library at the back of the home also got a wall of built-ins in high-gloss navy paint, and showcases how you can do a lot with a little square footage.

For color, we mostly worked in solids, but dramatic patterns serve as a push-pull through the home, like the jumbo botanical wallpaper in the hall, and oversized floral mural on the library ceiling. The primary bathroom got a Marrakech-inspired makeover with emerald and turquoise shower tile and coral vanity and walls, all inspired by the bright vintage Moroccan runner rug that guided the vision for this bathroom. The kitchen got teal deco mosaic tile and elegant lighting. And a range of elegant and quirky art run through each space, playing across a range of mythology, botanicals, and classic portraiture.

We layered additional function everywhere we could. We transformed the extra bedroom into a luxe library that doubles as a guest room with a velvet sofa bed. The living room has everything you need for lounging alone or with friends, including a record player and chess table. The dining room banquette is flanked with bookcases to store games and serving ware, and a circular black cane bar is the mecca for entertaining in this space.

The overall effect throughout the home is consumable maximalism. This home is full of personality and interest, yet it’s not overwhelming.
